Description
Little Mastermind Reading Cards – Level 2 | Consonant Blends & Phonics Reading
Ready for the next reading challenge? It’s time to blend!
Help your child take the next step in their reading journey with the Little Mastermind Reading Cards – Level 2. Building on the foundations introduced in Level 1, these phonics reading cards introduce children to words containing consonant blends, helping them tackle increasingly complex sound patterns with greater confidence.
Through carefully structured word sets, colour-coded letters and helpful picture cues, children practice recognising consonant combinations, blending individual sounds and reading complete words. The engaging format encourages repetition, gradual progression and growing independence in early reading.
Discover the World of Consonant Blends
Consonant blends occur when two or more consonants appear together in a word and their individual sounds can still be heard. Examples include bl, br, cl, cr, dr, fl, gr, pl, pr, sl, sm and st.
The Little Mastermind Reading Cards introduce children to these combinations in meaningful word-reading practice. As children encounter words containing consonant blends, they learn to recognise the letter patterns, identify the sounds and blend them smoothly to read the complete word.
This helps them move beyond simple three-letter words and become familiar with a wider range of spelling patterns.
Break Words into Sounds, Then Blend Them Together
Reading longer or more complex words can initially feel challenging. Breaking a word into manageable sounds gives children a practical way to approach it.
These cards encourage children to identify the sounds within a word before blending them together. With repeated practice, children can become more comfortable decoding unfamiliar words and gradually develop smoother, more confident reading.
Learn with Colour-Coded Letters
The Little Mastermind colour-coding system continues across the reading range:
- Pink – Consonants
- Blue – Vowels
This consistent visual distinction helps children identify consonants and vowels within increasingly complex words. It also reinforces a familiar learning approach introduced through Little Mastermind Sandpaper Letters and earlier literacy activities.
Picture Cues Make Reading More Meaningful
Colourful picture cues provide additional visual support, helping children connect the words they decode with their meanings. These associations make practice more engaging and give parents and educators opportunities to discuss vocabulary and encourage children to use new words in context.
Small Sets for Focused Reading Practice
Each box contains 24 sets of cards, with 6–8 words in each set. This organised format allows children to concentrate on a manageable group of words, revisit familiar combinations and repeat activities as needed.
As children progress through the sets, they can gradually build familiarity with consonant blends and move towards smoother word decoding. The pace can be adapted to each child’s readiness, allowing time for reinforcement before introducing new patterns.
An Important Step Towards More Confident Reading
Level 2 provides a bridge between the simple word-reading practice introduced in Level 1 and the more complex sound patterns introduced in Level 3.
By combining consonant-blend recognition, sound blending, picture associations and repeated practice, these reading cards support the development of essential early-reading skills.
